Dil Chahta Hai

''Dil Chahta Hai'' (English: 'The Heart Desires ) is a 2001 Indian comedy-drama film starring Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Akshaye Khanna, Preity Zinta, Sonali Kulkarni, and Dimple Kapadia. The first film written and directed by Farhan Akhtar, it is set in modern-day urban Mumbai and Sydney, and focuses on a major period of transition in the lives of three young friends.
In 2001, the film won National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi. It performed better in the urban areas of the country compared to the rural areas, which was attributed by critics to the city-oriented lifestyle depicted in which all the characters are from rich or upper-middle-class families. Over the years, it has attained a cult status.〔
==Plot==
This movie is about three childhood friends, Akash Malhotra (Aamir Khan), Sameer Mulchandani (Saif Ali Khan), and Siddharth "Sid" Sinha (Akshaye Khanna) who, after college, fall in love. In the beginning, Akash does not believe in the concept of love and does not engage in relationships lasting more than two weeks. Sameer is a genial, well-meaning, desperately romantic, but confused guy who is prone to romantic infatuations and believes to have found true love whenever he gets attracted to a girl. Sid, an artist by profession and the most mature of the three, is not interested in trivial romances and is dedicated to his work.
Akash, who is a cad in his personal life, resists the affections of a girl Deepa (Samantha Tremayne) from his college. At the college graduation party, he leads the song ''Hum Hain Naye'' and then proposes to a girl named Shalini (Preity Zinta) in jest, without being aware that she is engaged to Rohit, who is also at the party. Akash engineers a breakup between Sameer and his then girlfriend Priya (Suchitra Pillai). He then plans a vacation trip to the beaches of Goa with Sid and Sameer. Deepa runs into Akash again there, but he resists her advances, and Sid counsels her to forget Akash and move on.
Sameer predictably "falls in love" in Goa with a pretty Swiss girl, a story that ends in disaster. She ties him up and, with an accomplice, takes all of his money, his passport and the rest of his luggage. He hitches a ride with a kind lorry driver and returns home to find that his parents have arranged a meeting with a potential marriage prospect. He resists at first as he does not want an arranged marriage, but the moment he sees the girl, Pooja (Sonali Kulkarni), he realizes that she is 'the one'. Unfortunately, she is in a relationship and Sam has to be content with just being her friend.
Sid, in the meantime, befriends and eventually falls in love with Tara Jaiswal (Dimple Kapadia), an older divorcee and alcoholic, who had moved into a nearby house and shares his love for art. He decides to keep it from her, suppressing all hopes of a relationship as he knows that she, like most other people in society, would consider this scandalous. When his family and friends start finding out, everything goes wrong. Sid's mother is horrified and wrongly accuses Tara of having led Sid on. Akash makes fun of Sid's true intentions and his offensive remarks create a rift in their friendship. Tara hears that Sid has quarreled with friends and family because of her and feeling that she has ruined his life, refuses to see him. He goes on a vacation to his uncle's place to take some time off and get some painting done with some real peace and quiet.
By the time Sid comes back home, Akash is sent to Sydney, Australia by his parents to manage the family business. They hoped for him to get some sense of direction in life there, which surprisingly enough he does.
Meanwhile, Pooja had started to realize that even though sweet, her boyfriend was an utterly unexciting routine character. Sameer and Pooja start going out after she breaks up with her boyfriend, and Sam plans on proposing marriage soon.
Akash, on the other hand, is also soon to experience romantic upheaval. When his parents send him to Sydney, Australia to work for the family business, on the flight, he is coincidentally seated next to Shalini. He apologises for his earlier 'prank' and asks her to show him around the new city. Even though Shalini is engaged to Rohit, she finds herself agreeing. Soon she discovers Akash is very pleasant company to be around and they both, eventually, start to feel a certain 'something'. She tries to find out how he feels, but he holds back. She then leaves for India to marry Rohit, her fiancé. Akash tries to let her go, but then realises that he is unable to. He gets depressed and starts getting painful nostalgic memories of his two friends along with that. His father senses something amiss in his tone over the phone and asks him to return to India. And after getting to know of his situation, his father advises him to let her know his true feelings and see how she feels about it. He proposes to her on the eve of her wedding, at the wedding party, and she accepts with the blessings of Rohit's parents who raised her too from childhood, after a bit of an embarrassment. Rohit tries to resist but is helpless with his parents' decision and Shalini's longing for Akash.
Tara is hospitalized with liver cirrhosis and dies with Sid at her bedside. Sid and Akash reconcile (with a little help from Sameer) in one of the most touching scenes of the feature. Six months later the three friends go to Goa to rekindle fond memories along with Shalini and Pooja. There, Sid meets an unknown girl (Mandala Tayde), who is also vacationing in Goa with her two friends. They share a smile, implying that Sid is moving on from Tara.
During the credits of the film, all six are sitting at a table: Akash with Shalini, Sameer with Pooja, and Sid with his new wife.
